Double/Triple Glazing
Installing double or triple glazing can make huge cuts in heat loss through windows. It does this by trapping air between the panes of glass creating an insulating barrier that reduces heat loss, noise and condensation.
The method of comparing the performance of windows is the same as we do with walls floors and roofs by applying U-value measurements.
Older windows of the single pane style and a U-value in excess of 5, and in the early days of double glazing a U-value of 3+ was the norm. However, under today's building regulations, any window that is installed must have a U-value no worse than 1.8. Triple glazing could see that U-value drop to around 0.8.
If you are about to have, or are thinking of installing new windows, you can ask to see the Energy Rating or the Energy Rating Label of the windows your installer is proposing to fit.
